SBI’s $270M Ajaib Deal Signals Growing Confidence in Indonesia’s Crypto

SBI Holdings, a Tokyo-based financial giant, has poured Rp4.8 trillion (approximately US$270 million) to acquire a 20% stake in Indonesian online trading platform Ajaib. The deal marks the country’s largest funding deal since 2022, reflecting growing confidence toward the wealth tech, particularly crypto sector.

The funding round is part of Series C, which Ajaib closed at a higher valuation than before, though the exact figure wasn’t disclosed. Ajaib first reached unicorn status back in 2021, the same year it raised US$153 million in its Series B round.

Through the partnership, SBI plans to collaborate with Ajaib to promote circulation of JPYSC, its yen-denominated stablecoin, as expanding its cryptocurrency business further across the region. Meanwhile, Ajaib plans to use the fresh capital to expand its workforce in data science, engineering and product development.

Founded by Y Combinator alum Anderson Sumarli and his partner Yada Piyajomkwan in 2018, Ajaib has since positioned itself as one of Indonesia’s go-to platforms for digital investing.

Built on vision to democratize access to investing, the company has drawn backing from multiple notable investors, including fintech-focused VC Ribbit Capital, Alpha JWC Ventures, and Insignia Ventures.

Over the years, Indonesia has significantly shown a strong shift toward digital-first investing. The demand remains strong, fueled by mobile-first habits and first-time investors starting young. Easy-to-access platforms such as Ajaib allow users to manage their assets, stocks or crypto, in one place.

The numbers reflect that shift clearly, with the Indonesia Financial Services Authority (OJK) reported 22.7 million crypto investors in the first six months of 2026, more than double the roughly 10 million stock investors. Meanwhile, crypto transactions reached Rp28.58 trillion during the same period.

OJK’s Head of Digital Financial Asset Supervision, Adi Budiarso, has noted that public trust in Indonesia’s digital financial market remains solid, a sign of cautious optimism, despite ongoing global uncertainty.

According to Indonesia Startup Report 2026, wealth tech has emerged as fintech’s strongest sub-verticals after e-payment and lending. Stronger regulation and broader collaboration has enabled wide adoption of digital investment.

Fintech alone remains one of the key drivers of Indonesia’s digital economy, collectively raising US$77 million across 16 deals last year.
