Inside Foundry’s Take at Indonesia Comic Con 2026: What It Takes to Grow IP in Indonesia

Foundry Collective joined the final day of this year’s Indonesia Comic Con, October 4, speaking on entertainment IP at Jakarta Future Connectiva 2026. The stage brought together speakers from across the industry, with Foundry rep, Andreas Surya, diving into the foundation beneath it all.

For anyone catching Foundry for the first time, it’s a not-profit ecosystem platform built to empower Indonesia’s innovation landscape, bringing closer the country’s leading voices across technology, business, and policy. That broader focus also extends to intellectual property (IP) as Indonesian creative work increasingly finds more opportunities to grow.

According to Surya, IP touches nearly everything Foundry cares about, it’s where creativity meets business, culture becomes an asset, and where Indonesia’s stories find audiences beyond its original communities and scale its businesses.

What we’ve seen so far, for instance in music, Indonesia ranked second globally for the largest audience on Spotify Wrapped 2025. Meanwhile, in film, data compiled by local tracking firms placed the country ninth worldwide in 2024, with 126.2 million movie tickets sold.

Indonesia isn’t short on good stories, Surya pointed out the bigger question on how to actually grow them into IP that lasts. We see some already have: Agak Laen became one of Indonesia’s largest homegrown film successes. Si Juki sealed a licensing deal in Japan, along with its own art-toy line, while Toge Productions’ Coffee Talk Tokyo has been released internationally, proof that Indonesian-made stories can travel.

Getting more from there, he stated that IP should be more as an ecosystem and less as a single hit. Three things matter most including distribution and discovery, engagement, and monetization, he added. Without all three, a great story could easily stall out before reaching its audience.
